The important assessment criteria for perspectives of sedimentary basins oil and gas presence are the volume of sedimentary infilling and discovery frequence of large and the largest oil and gas fields. The South-Caspian oil and gas basin according to hydrocarbons value refers to category of large oil and gas basins and can be compared with Marakaib (Venezuela), Central-European and Permian (USA).
Volume of sedimentary infilling of SCB is 3,25 mil. km. At the beginning of 2006 88 oil and gas fields were revealed within SCB, among them 4 refer to category of the largest with initial geological reserves more than 500 mil. t.c.f. (Balakhany–Sabunchy–Ramany, Azery–Chirag–Guneshli, Shakh–deniz and Koturtepe). There are more than 50% of registered (explored) initial geological reserves of hydrocarbons in these fields. 14 fields refer to category of large fields with initial geological reserves 100-500 mil. t.c.f., where more than 28 % of initial geological reserves of hydrocarbons are concentrated.
