Over 20 years have passed since publication of first studies on basin modelling for the South Caspian Sedimentary Basin. For this period a wide range of dynamic processes varying from evaluation of physical nature of lithospheric plate, hydrocarbon generation and migration in sedimentary package to evolution of geometry of mud diapirs and adjacent to them layers has been studied. Significant results on the extent of hydrocarbon generation and migration, occurrence of oil and gas window in depth and time, distribution of abnormaly overpressure etc. have been obtained. It is underlined that there is need for strengthening and extending cooperation with scientists and specialists working in domestic organizations and western companies with the aim of constructing models meeting the highest requirements in this area. Refinement of models, as applied to non-equilibrium basins, particularly to the South Caspian basin, presumes application of 2-D and 3-D numerical description of variation in layers and shaly bodies geometry, mass exchange and phase transition dynamics in sedimentary pile, formation of specific mechanisms and pathways of subvertical fluid migration. The advantages presented by hardware – software tools of modelling for training and education of young specialists and students are noted. In view of rapid development of oil and gas production industry and transport system in Azerbaijan further studies on prediction of oil and gas content in the region using such advanced technologies as basin modelling is a primary direction in geosciences.
