The earthquakes depths distribution in the Eastern Caucasus and Caspian Sea region had been studied in the present paper. Shallow character of seismicity and relation of overwhelming majority of events to 10-20 km depth interval had been revealed. This depth interval is corresponded to sediments and consists of incompetent plastic rocks. Weak seismicity relates to sub-surface parts of the Earth crust and is conditioned by processes of phase and mechanical instability that become apparent due to de-fluidization and hydrocarbons formation in the petroliferous areas. The absence of intermediate and deep focus sources in the region is an evidence of absence of active Benioff zone in the region.
